What is the purpose of an Accelerated Kindergarten class?
Within each classroom exists a wide range of abilities. There are students who perform below grade level expectations, at grade level expectations, and above grade level expectations. While there are many programs and methodologies in place to help address the needs of struggling students, we rarely see programs designed to meet the unique needs of our above level performers. Often times, these high level learners end up becoming behavior disruptions due to the fact they are not being challenged and are bored. This is why we have decided to create an Accelerated class in each grade level…to challenge our students who consistently perform above grade level. We hope that creating this environment will help challenge and motivate these students to reach their full potential.
How is this class different from the other Kindergarten classes?
The goal of the Accelerated Kindergarten class is to challenge young minds by emphasizing higher-order thinking skills when doing projects and activities. In order to challenge and enrich my Kindergarten learners, I will implement a unique integration of the Core Knowledge Curriculum, Kindergarten Super-kid’s new program and math programs. Our class will follow the basic Kindergarten Curriculum Map. In regards to Science and Social Studies, I will implement more Project Base Learning. This means students will work together to help create power points, and other presentations as well as projects in class and at home. I will continually modify our curriculum throughout the year as we go, to make sure I am meeting my students’ needs. I will also develop reading groups within our class so I can provide additional assistance and enrichment where necessary.
How was my child selected to be in the Accelerated Kindergarten Class?
The children in my class were selected based on their scores on the CME Kindergarten Screening Assessment administered during the Kindergarten screening process.
